Arrgggghh! Family Pirate Movie Night!

Arrrggggh mateys!!!  My family and I just love pretending to be pirates, and we also do a lot of dreaming about when we can go on our next Disney Cruise, as they have an amazing pirate night on every.single.cruise.  Since DCL isn’t sailing right now, and it’s getting closer to International Talk Like a Pirate Day (every year on September 19th, ye hear?) we checked out St. Augustine for very pirate-y things to do (after all, it is the oldest city in the country so they know a lot about buccaneers).  After our St. Augustine excursion we decided to have our very own pirate fun at home, with our first ever Family Pirate Movie Night!

I didn’t have any trouble finding supplies either on Amazon or my other favorite store (Target), and the kids were beyond excited for our special family night.  I’ll break it down by category!

STARTING OUT

We began our hunt by having the kids get dressed in their costumes that we used on a Disney Cruise back in December of 2018.  Thankfully they fit, for the most part!

We added leggings under the girl’s costumes!

Next we had them use this chart ($2.47 from the Etsy shop Nothing Panda) to find their Pirate Name.  My husband made name tags for all of us based on this chart.  He printed a pirate map background from the computer then carefully burned the edges (he lit the edges of the paper with a lighter, then blew out the flame when the paper had the right edge that he wanted- outside of course)!

Oh, we had Alexa play a Pirate Playlist from Spotify during our whole party!

Use this list of Pirate Lingo by Pirate Voyages to get the party started the day before- it’s important to get in character, ye hear?

PIRATE FOOD

I feel like kid food and pirate food are very similar heehee!  After consulting my crew we decided on:

Pirates Booty

Pirate Teeth (popcorn)

Buried Treasure (ring pops)

Golden Nuggets (Hershey Gold Bars, can be found in the chocolate aisle)

Parrot Food (Ritz crackers, string cheese and carrot sticks- you could also do celery)

Treasure Map Pizza (Pillsbury Crescent Roll Pizza Dough and veggies to make a map)- I used this Neverland Pirate Map Pizza from Wonderland Recipes for inspiration.

Fish Bait (gummy worms)

Pirate Cookies (Chips AHOY cookies)

Fish and Chips (goldfish and potato chips)

We didn’t have any special drinks this time around, but this beverage container from Target would be great for holding your family’s favorite grog, or for a stronger adult drink, use one of these 8 recipes from The Pirate Ship Royal Conquest!

ACTIVITIES

Pirate Hook

This was the easiest craft EVER!  A Solo cup, some aluminum foil and a knife to make a hole in the cup to fit the foil through.  Argggghhh you can have a bunch of Captain Hooks in your house before you know it!

Kids at the end of the night displaying their swords and hook cups!

Decorating Cookies

I used Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix and it was very delicious!  The mix, a stick of butter, flour and an egg is all you need.  My husband said he thinks we should use this same mix for our Christmas cookies!!  That’s fine by me!

Since we are a Disney family, I just used my Mickey Mouse cookie cutter for our choice of cookie.  I bought red, black and white icing and some sprinkles and let them go to town!  They had a blast!

Scavenger Hunt

This activity I did find on Pinterest!  I LOVE this hunt, and because the kids had to decode the letters it took a little bit longer, which was nice!  My older kids (ages 6 and 7) decoded the words, and our 3 year old would find the next clue.  Their prize was these foam swords from Amazon, in addition to a family ice cream outing! This is where you can find the FREE printable scavenger hunt.  It’s on an awesome site called Party Delights.

Pirate Family Friendly Movies

After we did our activities I made the pizza while the rest of my family started watching our movie of choice:  Mickey Mouse’s The Three Musketeers!  Nope, not a true pirate movie, but it was kids’ choice, so we watched it!  Afterward we had a bit more time before the scalawags needed to head to bed, so we started one they used to watch on repeat: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Mickey’s Pirate Adventure.  It is on Disney +: it’s Season 4, Episode 13! Here’s the pirate version of the Hot Dog Dance, in case you need to smile today!

I realize not everyone’s kids are this young, so I also found a list of pirate movies broken down by age from Rockin Boys.

Pirate Decor

If you are interested in the decorations I bought off of Amazon to add that magical touch to our evening, here’s a list of what we used!  I found the black plates and bowls at Target in the Halloween section!

Netting (I put it on the table as a centerpiece)

Mini Chalkboards (these can be used for any party, or homeschooling, too)

Hanging Swirls (I let the kids place them around the house wherever they wanted to)

Pirate Map for background of pictures

Never Grow Up Banner

Cupcake Toppers (I just used them as décor in our food bowls, maybe next time I’ll make actual cupcakes)

As I type this I realize I totally forgot to use our pirate tattoos!!  I’ll save them for our next pirate movie night, or our next cruise!

There you have it, mates!  A fun and not too complicated Family Pirate Movie Night that you can easily do to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Or for whenever, because do you really need an excuse to dress up and have fun??

I’d love for you to sign up to be notified of new posts, or would love to have you follow along on Instagram or Facebook

Take a look at this quick video of our setup and some of the fun!
